After Zumba and Co., bokwa is now conquering German fitness studios. Dance fitness training from the United States combines boxing elements with the rhythm and image of traditional African Tribal Dance – all without difficult choreography and annoying counting steps. Eat smarter talked to the bokwa trainer Vera poursaidi and explained to her the most important facts about bokwa.
What are you doing in bokwa?
“In bokwa, you dance with numbers, letters and symbols,” she explained. “Without complicated choreography, everyone can dance bokwa, no matter old or young, men or women.” They danced to African rhythm charts and chamber music. Experts say that overall, the rhythm is fast but not too fast (about 140 times per minute), and the intensity increases over time.
Bokwa burns up to 1200 calories
Because the coach of bokwa only tells you which number or letter to jump, everyone can find their own rhythm, their own intensity and the rhythm they feel good about. According to Vera poursaidi, if you really work hard, you should be able to burn up to 1200 calories per hour.
Bokwa should be fun
But even for those who don’t reach this number, there should be one most important thing in bokwa: fun! This is guaranteed when everyone jumps “Superman” or the letter “C” together and makes interesting sounds such as “Hey, Hoo Hoo” or “uiui”. The basic step is the so-called 1 + 1. Like all other letters and numbers, the coach always indicates this with gestures and a large board hanging on the wall behind him. Vera poursaidi said that few people spoke in the course and did not need to count eight steps, which is well known in Taekwondo or aerobics.
Where does bokwa come from?
Like many fitness trends, bokwa comes from the United States and was developed by fitness coach Paul Mavi. His goal: a sport that combines elements of Taekwondo, aerobics, kapoera and African dance. The name consists of boxing’s “Bo” and South African dance Kwaito’s “Kwa”.
